massive dust storm swept across the Texas Panhandle on March 14, triggering a deadly highway pileup, multiple wildfires, and a state disaster declaration. Extreme winds reaching 80 mph fueled hazardous conditions, causing low visibility, dangerous travel, and rapid fire spread.

Fatal Multi-Vehicle Pileup on Highway 60

A major crash on Highway 60 near Bovina resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries. The accident was caused by reduced visibility from the dust storm, making it nearly impossible for drivers to see ahead. First responders worked quickly to clear the wreckage, but the treacherous conditions complicated rescue efforts.

Wildfires Force Evacuations Across the Region

Fueled by high winds and dry conditions, several large wildfires erupted across the Texas Panhandle, prompting mandatory evacuations.

Wildfire Updates (as of 5:55 p.m. ET):

  • Rest Area Fire – 1,000 acres | 0% containment
  • Windmill Fire – 9,000 acres | 0% containment

Authorities urged residents in Roberts, Ochiltree, and Gray counties to evacuate immediately for safety as the fires spread rapidly. Emergency crews are working to contain the blazes, but the extreme winds are making suppression efforts difficult.

Extreme Wind and Dust Storm Conditions

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued High Wind Warnings across the Texas Panhandle, reporting gusts over 80 mph. The strong winds not only worsened the wildfires but also triggered dust storms, causing near-zero visibility and dangerous driving conditions.

In Lubbock, powerful winds overturned a semi-truck, though the driver escaped without injury. City officials advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel, as blowing dust and debris made roadways hazardous.

Texas Declares Disaster in Affected Areas

In response to the widespread destruction, state officials have declared a disaster in affected areas, allowing for additional resources to assist emergency responders and impacted communities.

Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, urging residents to stay alert, follow evacuation orders, and limit travel until conditions improve.

For further updates, follow emergency alerts and official sources.
