EAST RIDGE, Tenn. — Authorities have confirmed that two adults were killed and multiple others injured, including two juveniles, in a fiery multi-vehicle crash involving a semi truck on Interstate 75 in East Ridge on Sun, May 11th.

East Ridge Police Chief Clint Uselton reported that the tragic incident involved six cars and one 18-wheeler. Two vehicles were engulfed in flames, and several motorists stopped to assist rescue efforts before emergency crews arrived.

“To speak well of humanity, several people on the interstate had actually gotten out and were trying to rescue people trapped inside the vehicles,” Uselton said.

Three individuals — including two juveniles — remain in critical condition in the ICU, while two others have since been released from the hospital.

The truck driver, identified as 65-year-old Joseph Antoinier from Florida, is facing multiple felony charges, including:

  • 2 counts of reckless homicide

  • Several counts of felony reckless endangerment

  • Reckless aggravated assault

The semi truck is reportedly operated by Valparaiso Trucking Corporation. The company has not responded to inquiries. However, Amazon, a client connected to the delivery operation, released a statement:

“This is a horrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with all those involved. We’re cooperating with all investigations.”

The crash occurred on the northbound side of I-75, causing full lane closures for several hours as crews worked to remove debris and investigate the cause. Dashcam footage from TDOT showed a fireball erupting in the distance at the time of the crash, though details of the collision are still under review.

Chief Uselton emphasized that the department’s top priority now is ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
