Traffic was backed up for hours on Tuesday afternoon after two fatal wrecks left two people dead.

The accidents happened on May 3rd beginning at 3:08 a.m. on Interstate 20 near Pell City, Alabama.

According to the St. Clair Times, Alabama State Troopers received a call regarding a two-vehicle accident involving a semi truck near mile marker 155, which was promptly followed by a four vehicle wreck near mile marker 157.

In the first wreck, motorist David Whitherspoon was driving a Chevy Tahoe when he collided with a semi truck for unknown reasons. The impact sent the Tahoe into a nearby barrier wall, killing Whitherspoon, who is said to have died due to blunt force trauma.

A second wreck involving four vehicles occurred a short while later. The wreck caused traffic issues into the afternoon and left one man dead. That victim was burned in the crash, and officials were unable to identify them. The reason behind that crash is not yet clear, but a picture of the incident indicates that two semi trucks were potentially involved.

The incidents were cleared by Tuesday afternoon after hours of stalled traffic. No further information has been released.
