Traffic was still blocked Thursday morning after a series of crashes involving semi trucks left three people dead on Wednesday afternoon.

The crashes happened on June 8th on Interstate 30 near Friendship, Arkansas.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the series of crashes occurred during rainy weather, and began with a two vehicle crash that led to two other chain-reaction wrecks. At least eight semi trucks were involved in the incidents, some of which caught fire, reported Metro.

At least three people were killed in the wreck, but police are continuing to evaluate the vehicles involved “to search for any evidence of the deceased that may still be trapped in the wreckage,” Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

At around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, traffic was at such a standstill that state workers began distributing snacks and water to stranded motorists. The eastbound lanes of the interstate reopened late on Wednesday, but the westbound lanes were still closed on Thursday morning as crews worked to repair asphalt damaged in the crash.

No further details have been released.
