A motorist is dead after stopping in the middle of Interstate 79 and shooting “randomly” at cars.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning, June 16th at around 10:30 a.m. in Weston, West Virginia.

According to West Virginia Metro News, a man in a silver Ford Explorer was driving on I-79 when he suddenly stopped in the middle of the northbound lanes and pulled out a rifle and a handgun. He then appeared to try to flag down several other motorists, but none would stop. Eventually, the man began randomly shooting at cars.

“He was just randomly shooting at anyone. I don’t know if there were any other vehicles hit, but I’m sure there were because he fired several rounds,” said Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller.

The shooter eventually shot Upshur County Chief Deputy Mike Coffman in the thigh before crawling beneath his SUV. The man was eventually shot and killed by police, who utilized a flatbed trailer as a makeshift barricade.

The identity of the shooter has still not been released, and the circumstances behind the shooting are still not known.
