Semi truck becomes wedged in tunnel when driver ignores height restrictions signs, Virginia State Police say.

The accident happened on March 11th in the Downtown Tunnel between Norfolk, Virginia and Portsmouth just after 1 p.m.

According to 13 News Now, the flatbed truck driver “ignored” the signs warning of height restrictions in the tunnel and attempted to drive through the westbound side anyway. The load then got stuck on the roof, wedging the truck inside of the tunnel.

The incident forced the closure of the westbound side of the tunnel along Interstate 264. Traffic has been redirected to southbound Interstate 464 while crews work to dislodge the load and flatbed trailer.

Removal of the tractor trailer is expected to take around two hours. It is unclear what citations, if any, will be issued as a result of the incident.
