A disgruntled trucking employee shot an off duty police officer multiple times at a trucking company in Illinois on Monday.

The incident occurred on March 11th at MN89 INC. in Oak Lawn, Illinois in the 10800 block of South Central Avenue.

According to Patch the MN89 employee arrived at the business and promptly got into an argument with other employees, which resulted in shots being fired. The disgruntled employee then started walking in the opposite direction of the other employees while removing a semi-automatic handgun from his coat.

The employee then turned toward an off-duty police sergeant hired for private security and pointed his gun at him. A second security officer fired at least one shot at the employee, who was allegedly physically attacking the off-duty sergeant. The trucking employee then fired five rounds at the off-duty sergeant’s chest, which bounced off of his bullet proof vest. A sixth round hit the officer in the leg.

Shortly after the six shots, the employee’s gun jammed, giving the off-duty sergeant a chance to physically subdue the trucking employee with the help of the second security officer.  The shot officer then applied a tourniquet to his leg and help was called to the scene. The officer was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

“The offender in this violent encounter is in our custody. Detectives will be going through all of the evidence and working with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on charges. This is an active investigation and no further details will be released until its conclusion and the filing of any criminal charges,” Oak Lawn police said in a written statement.
