Officer Who Shot Into Semi on I-95 Reassigned to Phone Duty Amid Ongoing Investigation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The police officer who opened fire on a semi truck during a March 10th incident on Interstate 95 has returned to duty but has been reassigned to a non-field role as investigations continue.

Lieutenant Marc Crawford, who was placed on administrative leave following the shooting, is now part of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) telephone response team, which handles minor incident reports by phone to allow other officers to focus on higher-priority calls.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear. The 70-year-old truck driver, James Debardeleben, sustained a non-penetrating gunshot wound, and investigators later discovered multiple bullet holes in the engine compartment of his semi.

The initial crash report offers conflicting information. It first lists the officer’s vehicle as having "no contributing action" in the crash, while simultaneously stating that the officer’s vehicle “was found at fault.”

An eyewitness truck driver offered dash cam footage of the incident, but technical difficulties have delayed its review. “He gave us consent to get into it, the problem is he doesn’t know how to download it. So we’re working on that,” said Chief Alan Parker, speaking to The Florida Times-Union.

Crawford has not yet issued a public statement. The case is under review by the State Attorney’s Office. Once that investigation concludes, an internal administrative review by JSO will follow. This marks the fourth officer-involved shooting involving Crawford in his 21-year law enforcement career.
