Man Found Dead Near Roadside in Ann Arbor Township May Have Set Himself on Fire, Police Say

Authorities are investigating a disturbing scene in Ann Arbor Township, Michigan, where a man was found dead and severely burned near a roadside wooded area on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, emergency responders were called to the area of Barton Shores and Whitmore Lake roads at approximately 3:45 p.m. after a report of a possible vehicle crash. When they arrived, crews discovered a small fire and the body of a man nearby.
Police believe the man may have intentionally set himself on fire. His injuries were described as extensive, and his identity could not be immediately confirmed. His age was also not available. The man was pronounced dead at 3:56 p.m., according to Huron Valley Ambulance spokesperson Marc Breckenridge.
The tractor unit of a blue semi-truck was found stopped on the side of Whitmore Lake Road, just past Dhu Varren Road. Authorities noted that the truck did not appear to have collided with anything, although visible skid marks led into a ditch. A portion of the road and a nearby hill were cordoned off with police tape.
No other individuals are believed to have been involved, and the investigation is ongoing. The scene was secured by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, including a K-9 unit, and the Ann Arbor Township Fire Department.
