A major drug trafficking operation was interrupted on Sunday, June 2, 2025, after a routine traffic stop on Interstate 70 in Geary County, Kansas led to the discovery of thousands of pounds of illegal drugs concealed inside a semi-truck trailer.

The bust occurred during a multi-agency criminal enforcement effort targeting the I-70 corridor. The operation spanned June 1 and 2, with the goal of identifying and apprehending major traffickers using Kansas highways for drug transportation.

According to the Geary County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO), deputies pulled over a commercial vehicle near mile marker 302 for traffic violations. After observing signs of possible criminal activity, officers deployed a K-9 unit, which led to a probable cause search of the trailer.

Inside, authorities found approximately 3,280 pounds of marijuana and 260 pounds of cocaine, with an estimated street value of $4 million.

Two men from California were arrested in connection with the case:

  • Yonas Tsegay, 33

  • Samson Haliab, 31

Both suspects are being held on $500,000 bond each. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has joined the ongoing investigation.

“This operation is a powerful example of what law enforcement can accomplish when we work together across jurisdictional lines,” said Geary County Sheriff Nate Boeckman. “The commitment and coordination of all agencies involved was key to this success.”
