DES PLAINES, Ill. — A semi-truck hauling garbage overturned Wednesday morning in Des Plaines, causing lane closures and an extensive cleanup operation during the early rush hour in Chicago’s northwest suburbs.

The crash happened in the 400 block of East Gold Road, where the truck, which appeared to be fully loaded with trash, flipped onto its side just before 7:30 a.m. According to authorities, debris from the trailer scattered across the roadway and shoulder, creating a messy scene for emergency responders.

SkyCam 9 captured footage of the overturned truck surrounded by crews working to contain the debris and assess the damage. At least two additional garbage trucks were brought in to help offload and clear the spilled waste from the roadway.

According to WGN, local police and public works crews worked to reroute westbound traffic from Golf and Seeger roads onto South Wolf Road, while eastbound lanes of Gold Road were temporarily closed near the site of the crash. Despite the overturned truck, officials said the incident did not cause severe backups beyond the immediate area.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it’s not yet clear whether the driver sustained any injuries. No other vehicles appeared to be involved. Cleanup and removal of the overturned trailer continued for several hours as crews carefully picked up the scattered trash to prevent further road hazards.

Residents and drivers in the area were urged to avoid Gold Road between Seeger and South Wolf Road until the cleanup is fully completed.
