SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — A tractor-trailer crash shut down Interstate 26 westbound for nearly 12 hours Tuesday after the truck overturned and spilled chicken carcasses across the highway near Dorman High School.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP), the crash happened at mile marker 26 when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, veered into a cable barrier, and flipped the vehicle. The impact caused the truck’s cargo — dead chickens — to scatter across all lanes.

The South Spartanburg Fire District responded to assist with what officials described as an extensive cleanup effort. Photos shared with 7NEWS showed the single-vehicle crash site and the spilled load covering the interstate.

According to FOX8, no injuries were reported, but the driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions.

The SC Department of Transportation and fire crews worked through the day to clear the scene. SCHP says the crash remains under investigation.
