Ohio transportation officials have announced a major initiative aimed at significantly increasing the number of available truck parking spaces statewide in an effort to enhance safety and reduce crashes involving commercial vehicles.

During a July 29, 2025, news conference at a rest area located on I-71 in Warren County, Governor Mike DeWine and representatives from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) unveiled a plan to expand commercial truck parking at dozens of sites across the state. The initiative will add more than 1,400 new parking spaces at 33 ODOT-owned locations, representing a $150 million investment.

ODOT stated that the 33 locations were selected after an extensive review of existing department properties. The planned expansions will more than double the current parking capacity at ODOT-maintained sites, providing safer rest options for drivers. These new truck parking facilities will be developed across 19 counties, including Allen, Ashland, Ashtabula, Auglaize, Belmont, Clermont, Fayette, Franklin, Gallia, Guernsey, Henry, Lake, Mahoning, Medina, Ross, Summit, Warren, and Wyandot.

Currently, Ohio has approximately 14,200 truck parking spaces statewide, most of which are located at privately-owned truck stops or businesses. Officials hope that adding these new lots will cut down on the number of drivers forced to park in unsafe or unauthorized areas, reducing crash risks and improving overall road safety.

Construction on the new commercial truck parking lots is expected to begin in 2026, with completion scheduled by the end of 2027. ODOT Director Pamela Boratyn said the initiative will position Ohio as a national leader in truck parking capacity:

“Ohio’s new truck parking plan is a major step forward in improving safety for truck drivers and everyone on the road. These projects will make our state a national leader in total truck parking capacity—setting the standard for safety and service.”
