Wrong-Way Semi Driver on I-55 Bridge Detained by Police in Memphis

A dangerous incident unfolded Tuesday morning on the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge when a semi-truck driver drove the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 55, bringing traffic to a halt and alarming commuters.
The truck, operated by Raj Transportation, was caught on video by stunned drivers attempting to move forward against oncoming traffic on the I-55 bridge. The situation escalated when Arkansas State Police intervened and detained the driver.
Witness Raleigh Cupples, who was commuting from Arkansas to Tennessee around 10 a.m., described how traffic came to a standstill. “I saw a truck in front of me switch lanes, and that’s when I realized a semi-truck was driving in my direction,” she said.
In the video Cupples recorded, a state trooper is seen jumping over the median with his weapon drawn. He opened the truck’s driver-side door and attempted to remove the driver, who refused to exit the vehicle.
“I don’t know if he was confused or having a medical emergency,” Cupples speculated. Two additional troopers then arrived, one carrying a rifle, and they forcefully removed the driver from the cab, restrained him on the ground, and placed him in handcuffs.
Despite the chaos, Cupples said she did not feel in danger. “The police had a handle on it, which I’m thankful for,” she stated. Traffic was soon redirected around the immobilized truck, and Cupples was among the first drivers to proceed. “I’m just thankful no one got hurt. It could have been a disaster.”
The exact reason for the driver’s actions remains unclear, and authorities have yet to confirm whether charges have been filed.
