GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — A semi-truck crashed into a parked Union Pacific train early Thursday morning west of Grand Island, resulting in a derailment and road closure along Husker Highway, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. on October 2, near the intersection of Husker Highway and South 60th Road, south of the Heartland Public Shooting Park. Authorities report the train was stationary and blocking the crossing when the semi-truck, traveling on Husker Highway, struck it. The crash happened at a railroad crossing with no warning lights or crossing signals, a factor that may have contributed to the incident.

The impact derailed two empty train cars, according to a Union Pacific (UP) spokesperson. The driver of the semi-truck suffered minor injuries, and the train crew was uninjured. However, the semi's power unit was deemed a total loss.

As of 7:15 a.m., Husker Highway west of 60th Road remained closed while cleanup crews worked at the site. The tracks involved are part of an access line serving the old ordnance plant in the area.

Union Pacific emphasized that placement of active warning systems (such as gates and flashing lights) at rail crossings is handled by state and local agencies, not the railroads. UP also issued reminders for motorists:

  • Always slow down when approaching a railroad crossing.

  • Look both ways and verify that the tracks are clear before crossing.

  • Stay at least 15 feet away from the nearest rail if a train is approaching.

  • Avoid distractions when near a crossing.

The crash highlights the ongoing safety concerns at unprotected railroad crossings, particularly those lacking modern warning systems, according to KSNB Local4.
