SILVERTHORNE, Colo. — A tragic early morning semi-truck crash on Interstate 70 near Silverthorne claimed the lives of two adults and one child, forcing a full closure of the westbound lanes for nearly 12 hours, authorities said.

According to CBS News Colorado, the crash happened around 5:45 a.m. Sunday near milepost 208, when a Freightliner Cascadia hauling a trailer veered off the right side of the road while descending a downhill straightaway, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP). The truck struck a barrier, rolled across the highway, and erupted in flames, coming to a stop while blocking all lanes of traffic.

Photos released by CSP showed bags of dog food scattered from the trailer. Due to the extensive fire damage, investigators initially struggled to determine how many people were inside the truck.

In a Sunday night update, CSP confirmed that the driver, a 37-year-old woman from Deming, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with a 39-year-old man from Deming and a 9-year-old girl from Jacksonville, Florida, who were passengers in the vehicle.

The Summit County Coroner’s Office will release the victims’ identities after notifying their families. CSP is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and urged any witnesses to contact CSP Dispatch at (970) 249-4392, referencing case number VC250372.

Traffic on I-70 was fully reopened by 6 p.m. Sunday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
