PORTAGE, Ind. — A 54-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 20 near Douglas Drive after a semi-truck crossed into oncoming traffic, according to the Portage Police Department.

Investigators said the Freightliner semi-truck, driven by Broko Stankovic, of Lyons, Illinois, was traveling eastbound when a Ram Sprinter van ahead slowed to make a left turn. Stankovic reportedly swerved left to avoid the van, losing control and crossing into the westbound lanes, where his semi jackknifed and struck a Subaru Crosstrek head-on.

The driver of the Subaru, a 54-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released. The van’s driver and passenger were treated for minor injuries and released.

Police said Stankovic was operating without a valid commercial driver’s license and using a suspended Illinois CDL that belonged to a family member. His trucking company was also found not registered with the Department of Transportation.

Stankovic was arrested and charged with criminal recklessness resulting in death and reckless homicide, both felonies. As he was being booked into the Porter County Jail, authorities confirmed that an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer was placed on him due to his immigration status.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not confirmed whether Stankovic is currently in ICE custody, according to FOX 32 Chicago.
