JASPER COUNTY, Mississippi — A truck carrying research monkeys overturned Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 59 near Heidelberg, prompting an emergency response and the shooting of several animals after they escaped from the wreckage, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred near mile marker 117, north of Heidelberg, as the truck transported Rhesus monkeys from Tulane University in New Orleans to a testing facility in Florida. Early information from deputies indicated that the monkeys were considered potentially infectious, with reports suggesting they carried hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID-19.

Sheriff’s officials described the monkeys as weighing about 40 pounds each and warned they could be aggressive toward humans, advising the use of protective equipment when handling them. Officers said that if any escaped the site, they were to be shot for public safety.

However, Tulane University later disputed claims that the monkeys were carrying infectious diseases, stating:

“The primates in question belong to another entity and are not infectious. We are collaborating with local authorities and sending animal care experts to assist.”

According to KTRE News, initial reports suggested all the monkeys had escaped, but an updated statement said three remained unaccounted for as of Tuesday afternoon.

Responding agencies included Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries and local law enforcement, who worked to contain the animals and clear the crash site.
