OAK CREEK, Wisconsin — A hit-and-run crash between two semis near Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport caused a tanker truck to overturn and spill hazardous liquid on Wednesday, leading to multiple freeway closures and major traffic delays.

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 1 p.m. on I-41/94 southbound near College Avenue. A 35-year-old truck driver struck a tanker truck, causing it to roll over, then fled the scene.

The tanker driver was transported to a local hospital with arm pain, officials said. The striking semi’s driver was located about an hour later at a nearby gas station and taken into custody for hit-and-run.

The overturned tanker was hauling a glass resin, described as a non-flammable hazardous material. The owner of the trucking company sent another tanker to siphon and recover the load so it could still be safely delivered.

Hazmat teams and cleanup crews worked for several hours to contain the spill and remove debris. The crash forced the closure of multiple southbound lanes, including ramps from Layton Avenue and College Avenue, as well as portions of the Mitchell Interchange.

By 8:36 p.m., all freeway lanes were reopened following the extended cleanup effort, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the driver facing hit-and-run charges.

According to WISN, hazmat crews confirmed the spill was contained and posed no ongoing threat to the public.
