JOLIET, Ill. — A man driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) in the wrong direction while fleeing from police was killed early Saturday morning after crashing head-on into a semi-truck on Interstate 55, according to the Illinois State Police (ISP).

Troopers were called to I-55 near Route 30 around 4:46 a.m. after reports of an ATV being driven on the highway. When officers located the vehicle, the driver turned around and began traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, authorities said.

Police attempted to stop the ATV, but the driver continued to flee before colliding with a semi-truck near Black Road in Joliet.

The ATV driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the semi-truck driver was not injured, according to ISP.

According to NBC Chicago, the crash remains under investigation.
