Truck driver charged with following too closely after fiery crash between two Freightliners on Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel
SUFFOLK, Va. — A fiery crash involving two tractor-trailers shut down the northbound lanes of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT) for several hours on Thursday morning, according to Virginia State Police.
The crash occurred around 11:15 a.m. when a northbound Freightliner slowed for traffic congestion and was rear-ended by another Freightliner hauling lumber. The impact caused the lumber truck to catch fire, filling the bridge-tunnel with smoke.

Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene, closing all northbound lanes for about five hours and temporarily halting southbound traffic. The roadway fully reopened around 4:15 p.m. No injuries were reported.

The driver of the lumber truck, identified as 52-year-old Marvin Tucker, was charged with following too closely. The crash remains under investigation.
