SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA — A semi-truck driver already on DUI probation is facing new charges after California Highway Patrol officers stopped him on Interstate 5 last week and discovered he was driving with a blood alcohol content more than six times the legal limit, authorities said.

The incident unfolded after multiple 911 calls reported a reckless semi-truck swerving across lanes on I-5 north of Pocket Road, creating a major hazard for other motorists. CHP officers quickly located the truck near Sutterville Road, where the driver was weaving erratically and failing to maintain lane control.

According to The Trucker, when officers attempted to pull the semi over, the driver stopped in the No. 1 lane instead of moving onto the right shoulder. To prevent a potential multi-vehicle crash, the responding officer initiated a traffic break, slowing approaching vehicles and safely guiding the semi-truck to the shoulder.

CHP said the driver showed “clear signs of alcohol impairment,” and a DUI investigation revealed a .275 PAS result — more than 6× the legal limit and especially alarming given the driver’s probation status for a previous DUI conviction. CHP did not identify the driver, but confirmed no injuries were reported during the stop.

Authorities emphasized that the incident could have resulted in a catastrophic crash due to the semi-truck’s size and the driver’s extreme impairment. The case remains under investigation.
