The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority said an illegally over-height semi-truck hit a county bridge above the Interstate 44 / Will Rogers Turnpike in Rogers County, prompting a temporary closure of the bridge. On Tuesday afternoon, Oklahoma Turnpike Authority crews closed the Northeast Sawyer Road / County Road South 4220 bridge between East 460 Road and East 470 Road near Claremore in Rogers County.

The semi-truck damaged at least one bridge beam above the Will Rogers Turnpike. Crews closed the bridge until repairs can be made, but traffic remained open underneath on the turnpike.

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority said it is working with county officials and will provide updates as they become available.

Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews quickly inspected multiple county bridges above the Interstate 44 / Will Rogers Turnpike after the illegally over-height vehicle drove Tuesday afternoon from State Highway 266 near Verdigris to east of State Highway 28 near Vinita. At the time of the inspection update, officials said six bridges between those points were showing damage and four of the county road bridges had been closed until repairs can be made.

Officials said the Will Rogers Turnpike remained open in each direction, but short, temporary closures could occur as inspections continued.

Officials listed the bridges hit as:

  • East 530 Road — closed between South 4130 Road and Lakeway Road

  • South 4220 Road — closed between East 460 Road and East 470 Road east of Claremore

  • North 429 Road — closed between East 390 Road and State Highway 28

  • North 4300 Road — closed between East 380 Road and West 390 Road

  • North 4310 Road — open

  • West 370 Road — open

Officials said inspections were ongoing and additional updates would be provided as they become available.
