ARAPAHOE COUNTY, COLORADO — Interstate 70 east of Denver reopened Wednesday after a crash involving a semi-truck led to a temporary closure, including a full shutdown in both directions to allow a medical transport helicopter to land, authorities said.

Colorado State Patrol said troopers responded at approximately 12:41 p.m. Wednesday to a single-vehicle crash involving a semi-truck on westbound Interstate 70 at milepost 324, west of Deer Trail.

CSP said initial reports from the scene indicated a “significant fuel leak.” The agency requested its Hazmat Unit, which responded to assist with cleanup efforts.

I-70 was closed in both directions to accommodate a medical transport helicopter, according to CSP. Authorities said the truck driver was flown to the hospital, and the extent of the driver’s injuries was unknown.

Officials said the eastbound lanes reopened first, and the westbound lanes later reopened as well.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, CSP said. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported high winds in the area.

The investigation remains ongoing.
