Wrong-Way Motorist Dies After Slamming Into Semi-Truck on Interstate 80 in Sparks
SPARKS, NEVADA — A deadly head-on crash shut down a portion of Interstate 80 in Sparks early Sunday after a wrong-way driver struck a semi-truck near Pyramid Way, forcing a multi-hour closure and traffic detour.
Troopers responded to westbound Interstate 80 near Pyramid Way just before 5:00 a.m. on December 21 after receiving a report of a head-on crash involving a semi-truck.
The preliminary investigation indicated that a car was traveling eastbound in the westbound travel lanes when it hit the semi-truck head-on.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle died at the scene, and the semi-truck driver was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Officials said westbound Interstate 80 at Pyramid Way was expected to remain closed until about noon. All westbound traffic was expected to be forced to exit at Pyramid Way and go around the closure.
The investigation remains ongoing as troopers continue working to determine the circumstances that led to the wrong-way collision.
