Car Ends Up Under Semi-Trailer on Pennsylvania Turnpike, Driver Escapes on Own

MT. PLEASANT, PENNSYLVANIA — A passenger car ended up pinned underneath the rear of a tractor-trailer after a two-vehicle crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Thursday night, with the driver able to get out without assistance while firefighters provided traffic control and lighting until the car was removed.

The Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department said crews were activated at 8:23 p.m. for a crash at the 87.7-mile marker involving a car and a tractor-trailer, with injuries initially unknown. While units were en route, responders were advised that the passenger car was pinned underneath the rear of the trailer, and Rescue 110 was added to the call.

According to the fire department, Assistant 38 arrived first and confirmed one passenger car pinned under the trailer, with no entrapment, and said the driver had self-extricated. Fire crews then maintained traffic control and scene lighting as the car was removed from beneath the trailer.

The fire department said units were back in service at 10:10 p.m., about two hours after the initial dispatch. The driver’s injury status was not confirmed.

The incident remains under review.
