ELKHART COUNTY, INDIANA — A series of crashes during heavy snow and low visibility blocked both eastbound and westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near mile marker 94 Wednesday afternoon, involving roughly 30 vehicles including at least 10 semi trucks, according to Indiana State Police and the Indiana Toll Road.

Officials said the crash scene was on I-80 eastbound near the Bristol Toll Plaza, about two miles east of Elkhart. Investigators said the first collision was reported around 3:51 p.m. local time, involving three vehicles in the eastbound lanes, which then triggered multiple secondary crashes in the same area.

Troopers reported numerous semis and passenger vehicles were scattered across the roadway, and at least one vehicle crossed into the westbound lanes and came to rest in a ditch on the north side of the road.

Authorities said multiple people were injured and taken to local hospitals, including a semi-truck driver who was trapped for several hours before being extricated. Officials said the reported injuries were believed to be non-life-threatening.

With both directions impacted, officials said eastbound traffic was diverted at Exit 83 (Mishawaka) and westbound traffic was diverted at Exit 96 (CR 17) while crews worked to clear approximately 30 damaged vehicles from the roadway.

Authorities said all lanes reopened around 8:00 p.m. after extended cleanup and recovery operations.
