RAWLINS, WYOMING — Two oversized “superloads” hauling construction equipment are back on the move out of Rawlins after traveling across Wyoming all week under escort, according to the latest updates from the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) and WYDOT.

Officials said today’s leg begins with the two superloads departing Rawlins and traveling US Highway 287 to Wyoming Highway 220 to Wyoming Highway 257, then arriving into the Casper area on US Highway 20. Motorists on these routes are urged to expect delays and give the loads extra room, noting each transport is accompanied by multiple escorts.

What the superloads are

WHP/WYDOT said the transports are carrying construction equipment and qualify as superloads due to their size and weight:

  • 15 feet 8 inches tall

  • 27 feet 6 inches wide

  • 110 feet long

  • Approx. 216,000 pounds (vehicle + load combined)

Because of the load width, officials said both lanes of travel must be used in many areas. To reduce roadway strain and improve safety, the convoy typically travels 25–30 mph, slowing to about 10 mph over bridges. Stoppages and significant delays should be expected, and timing/routes may change due to the complexity of the move.

How the week’s route unfolded

WHP/WYDOT said the move began Friday, Jan. 23, when the superloads were expected to arrive around 3 p.m., stage overnight in Evanston, and then continue along a planned route toward Gillette.

As the convoy progressed, officials issued multiple updates:

  • The loads departed the Evanston port of entry and were diverted around the Green River Tunnels using WY 372, WY 28, and US 191, before rejoining I-80 in Rock Springs.

  • Later updates placed the loads traveling eastbound on I-80 from Rock Springs on their way to Rawlins.

  • Officials confirmed the two superloads made it to Rawlins and stayed overnight, before continuing today toward Casper.

What’s next after Casper

Officials said the broader route continues north and east toward the Gillette area after Casper, with the convoy expected to:

  • Come into the Casper area on US 20, merge onto I-25, then continue to WY 259, WY 387, and onward toward WY 59 for a final staging stop south of Gillette.

WHP/WYDOT emphasized that drivers should be patient, avoid crowding the convoy, and follow escort directions while the superloads move through.
