NEWTON, Mass. — Interstate 95 northbound in Newton was shut down late Tuesday morning following what officials described as a serious multi-vehicle crash that left a tractor-trailer blocking all northbound travel lanes and caused major traffic backups.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) said in a social media post at 11:40 a.m. that the crash was causing “significant delays.” Aerial images from the scene showed a heavily damaged car pinned between the tractor-trailer and the median, with numerous police and fire vehicles and emergency personnel responding.

In a subsequent email update, MassDOT said I-95 north is closed at mile marker 38 in Newton because of the crash. Officials said the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours as crews work the scene and clear the roadway.

It was not immediately clear whether any additional vehicles were involved beyond what was visible from aerial footage, and authorities had not released information on injuries as of the latest update.
