HOMER, N.Y. — A 23-year-old man from Camden suffered hand and facial injuries after a slab of ice flew off a tractor-trailer and smashed through his pickup’s windshield on Interstate 81 northbound in the Town of Homer, New York State Police said.

Troopers responded around 12:35 p.m. on Jan. 30, 2026, after receiving a report of a vehicle with a shattered windshield. Police said their investigation determined the tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet pickup were both traveling north on I-81 when the ice came off the truck and struck the pickup behind it. The impact shattered the pickup’s windshield and the driver-side front window, authorities said.

State police said the tractor-trailer driver did not stop after the incident. The pickup driver was evaluated by EMS at the scene and declined transport to the hospital, according to the report. Ron’s assisted with towing the damaged vehicle.

The investigation remains ongoing. Troopers also reminded motorists — especially as temperatures fluctuate — to fully clear snow and ice from vehicles before driving to help prevent dangerous road hazards.
