Kansas City’s “Undefeated” Independence Avenue Bridge Claims Another Truck as Roofing Material Scatters Across Road
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI — Another truck has collided with the Independence Avenue Bridge in Kansas City, scattering debris and rolls of roofing material across the roadway beneath the notorious overpass. Kansas City police said the driver suffered a non-life-threatening hand injury, and no other injuries were reported.
Officers were called to the scene after the truck appeared to hit the bridge structure, sending cargo onto the street below. Photos shared by police showed debris spread across the area under the overpass as crews worked around the crash site.

The Independence Avenue Bridge has become infamous in recent years for catching drivers who realize too late their vehicles are too tall to clear the underpass. In February 2024, the city installed a warning curtain ahead of the bridge in an effort to alert drivers before they reach the low clearance.
The bridge’s reputation has grown so large it’s often referred to online as the “undefeated champion,” a nickname tied to its viral history — including a T-shirt and Facebook page dedicated to the overpass and its repeated truck strikes.
