Sheet of Ice Flies Off Passing Vehicle and Smashes Through Box Truck Windshield on I-95 in Virginia, Injuring Driver as VSP Warns to Clear Roof Ice
SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA — A box truck driver suffered minor injuries Sunday morning after a sheet of ice flew off another vehicle, shattered the truck’s windshield, and entered the cab while he was traveling northbound on Interstate 95, according to Virginia State Police. The incident happened near the 126-mile marker, and the driver reported the ice dislodged from a passing vehicle before striking the truck.
State police used the crash as a warning for motorists to clear all snow and ice from their vehicles — including the roof — before driving, noting that unsecured ice can become a dangerous projectile.
VSP also released updated statewide crash figures tied to the ongoing hazardous weather period. From Friday morning through 5 p.m. Sunday, Virginia State Police responded to 325 crashes, including 34 injury crashes. Police said not all of the crashes were connected to last week’s winter storm. During the storm period, VSP reported three fatal crashes in Greensville, Dinwiddie, and Fauquier counties (two of those remain under investigation).
