TUMWATER, Wash. — A bald eagle was rescued Sunday evening after being struck by a semi-truck on southbound Interstate 5 near Trosper Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The incident occurred between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., when the eagle was hit and ended up on the right shoulder of I-5, between the highway and a retaining wall. It was not immediately clear whether the bird was struck while in flight or while on the ground.

The rescue effort involved multiple agencies and community members. Washington State Patrol, the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and concerned citizens stopped to assist. WDFW Officer Messbarger secured the eagle and transported it for care.

The bird was taken to Raindancer Wild Bird Rescue in Olympia. In a social media update, the rescue said the eagle is “feisty, eating, and has no palpable injuries.”

The eagle will be transferred to Twin Harbors Wildlife Center for radiographs and continued treatment.
