Tractor-Trailer Falls Off Bridge and Crashes Onto Ramp Below in Raleigh; Triggers Hazard Investigation for Green Liquid Spill
RALEIGH, North Carolina — A tractor-trailer fell off a bridge and crashed underneath the ramp connecting Interstate 87 to Interstate 440, prompting closures and an ongoing emergency response.
Interstate 440 has since reopened to traffic. However, the ramp from I-87 onto 440 remains closed as crews continue to investigate and clean up the scene.
For safety reasons, nearby access roads remain blocked. A Raleigh Police vehicle is stationed at a dirt road leading up toward 440, where the crashed tractor-trailer is located beneath the ramp.
First responders arriving at the scene reported finding a green liquid on Interstate 87. Authorities believe the substance may be fertilizer, though its exact nature has not yet been officially confirmed.
The condition of the truck driver has not been released. Officials are also working to determine when Interstate 87 will fully reopen.
Throughout the response, multiple vehicles were seen entering and exiting the restricted area. Raleigh Police temporarily moved a patrol vehicle several times to allow a backhoe and a flatbed truck to access the crash site. A Wake County EMS paramedic unit was also observed entering the area and returning shortly afterward.
Cleanup operations appear to be underway as crews work beneath the ramp where the tractor-trailer came to rest.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash and assess roadway conditions before reopening all affected ramps.
