THP Says "Stop Saved Lives" After Pulling Over Truck for Speeding 17 MPH Over Limit in Tennessee — Steer Tire Blows Out Seconds Later
TENNESSEE — A commercial vehicle's steer tire blew out moments after being pulled over for traveling 17 miles per hour over the speed limit, a sequence of events that Tennessee Highway Patrol says likely prevented a catastrophic crash.

On March 3, 2026, a THP Motor Carrier Plus Middle Region trooper conducted a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle for speeding. Moments after the vehicle came to a stop, the steer axle tire blew out.

"A steer tire failure at highway speeds can have catastrophic consequences, especially with the size and weight of a CMV," THP said. "There is no doubt that this stop prevented a potentially serious crash and saved lives that day."

THP used the incident to issue a broader warning to the trucking community. "Speed and equipment condition matter. Enforcement isn't just about citations, it's about protecting the motoring public and making sure everyone gets home safely. Slow down, and maintain your equipment. Safety is not optional."
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The driver's identity has not been released.
