A parked semi truck was badly damaged by a motorist who had recently been involved in a police pursuit in California early this morning.

The unusual crash occurred in Santa Fe Springs, California, on January 27.

The incident began shortly before 2 a.m. when Whittier police began pursuing a motorist driving a Mazda for running a red light, according to a report from Whittier Daily News.

The Mazda reportedly hit speeds of 90 m.p.h., and officers eventually called off the pursuit for safety reasons.

However, 10 minutes later, police were called about a crash involving the Mazda and a parked semi truck.

Police say that the Mazda driver went through a chain link fence and down into a riverbed, going airborne and colliding with the roof of the parked truck with a sleeping driver inside, shearing off part of the roof of the vehicle. The Mazda also reportedly struck a building before coming to a stop.

The Mazda driver was hurt in the crash but tried to flee the scene. Police caught up to him about a block from the crash site. He was transported to the hospital.

The truck driver was not seriously injured.
