Two people are dead and five are in very serious condition after a chain reaction crash in a construction zone in Indiana on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened at around 3 p.m. on June 1st in South Bend, Indiana on the Indiana Toll Road, which is a part of Interstate 80/90.

According to WSBT 22 News, a semi truck traveling near mile marker 71 on the Indiana Toll Road failed to slow down near a construction site and ran into a line of slowed vehicles. At least one of the cars caught fire, killing that motorist. Another motorist also died at the scene.

Five people were sent to the hospital following the crash. Four are on advanced life support, while one is on basic life support, reported WNDU 16 News. It is not clear if the truck driver was injured in the wreck.

The Indiana Toll Road was shut down until around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening. The roadway has since been reopened.

“As a society we are losing the value of life. Life is very precious and very important…Whenever we are at scenes like this, even if somebody isn’t one of the fatalities, they are survivors that have to deal with this in their own ways to and hopefully they can deal with it in a healthy manner and move on…” said Sergeant Ted Bohner with Indiana State Police.

“We are deep into construction season. We are going to see them throughout the summer and probably into the fall. The time to get ready for that is past…We need to be in that mode of driving, expecting to come up on these work sites and drive accordingly and be aware of everything.”

No further information has been released.
