Texas authorities have announced charges against a Mexican-based truck driver who was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle methamphetamine into the U.S.

On June 1, 2022, a federal grand jury returned a two count indictment against 33 year old Mexican national Luis Alberto Garza Cisneros, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas.

Authorities say that on May 6, 2022, Cisneros attempted to enter the U.S. in a tractor trailer hauling stainless-steel scrap at the World Trade Bridge Port of Entry located in Laredo, Texas.

The tractor trailer was referred for a secondary inspection.

After an X-ray scan revealed anomalies, officers conducted a physical search of the vehicle.

During the search, they discovered approximately 912 pounds of liquid meth concealed in the truck’s fuel tanks.

The seized drugs are worth an estimated $18 million, authorities say.

If convicted, Cisneros faces up to life in prison and a possible $10 million maximum fine.

Homeland Security Investigations conducted the investigation with assistance of Customs and Border Protection.

“Officers assigned to CBP cargo facilities ensure effective border security by preventing and countering the flow of suspected narcotics entering the country,” said Port Director Alberto Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “Large-scale seizures, such as this one, provide an excellent example of border security management and how it helps prevent illicit contraband from reaching our communities.”
