The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will temporarily restrict the transport of hazardous materials on an interstate running through downtown Birmingham due to a major sporting event.

Hazmat cargo shipments will not be allowed on I-59/20 in downtown Birmingham from Thursday, July 7 through Sunday, July 17, according to the Alabama Trucking Association (ATA).

The hazmat restriction will be in place on I-59/20 from I-65 to the east of the E. B. Stephens Freeway (US Hwy 31).

Truck drivers hauling hazmat through the area will be asked to use I-459 to bypass the restricted area.

The restriction has been issued due to an 11 day sporting event called the World Games taking place in Birmingham.

“With increased crowds and foot traffic underneath the raised portion of I-59/20, the Secret Service has placed a very high-security level in preparation for the many events and functions that will happen under or near the interstate bridges that rise over the Birmingham Central Business District, which includes Legacy Arena, Protective Stadium, and the Uptown Entertainment District,” reads a news release on the closure.

ALDOT will use digital and static signage to spread awareness about the restriction.
