The father of the driver who lost his life while driving a fan-favorite jet-powered semi truck has provided new information on what he believes led to the fatal crash.

Chris Darnell, 40, lost his life in an accident that occurred around 1 p.m. on July 2 at the Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival in Battle Creek, Michigan.

As part of a stunt, Darnell was racing two airplanes when jet truck SHOCKWAVE crashed at the air show.

No other injuries were reported.

Neal Darnell, father of Chris Darnell, recently provided an update on the events leading up to the crash that killed his son.

Neal Darnell explained that a blown tire ruptured SHOCKWAVE’s fuel tank. “As the tire came apart it ruptured the fuel tank on the left side of the car and that, of course, initiated the fire. It happened so quickly that Chris didn’t even have time to react,” he told the AP.

Neal Darnell explained that he came to this conclusion after watching video of the crash and inspecting the truck.

The fatal accident remains under investigation by Battle Creek Fire, Battle Creek Police, and Federal Aviation Administration Officials.

SHOCKWAVE is owned by Darnell Racing Enterprises, Inc. based in Springfield, Missouri.
