A truck driver is facing multiple charges after he was allegedly caught using a false license plate in order to avoid tolls.

The Maine State Police (MSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit (Troop K) recently received a complaint about a semi truck traveling throughout the interstate and Maine Turnpike system while displaying a license plate stolen out of Massachusetts on the front of the truck, according to MSP.

The complaint said that the truck driver was avoiding tolls by passing through the EZpass lanes with the stolen plate.

The complaint led to a multi-agency investigation involving New York State Police, the New Hampshire State Police, and US Customs and Border Protection. Investigators eventually identified a suspect.

Early on July 12, 2022, troopers located the suspect truck traveling on I-95. Police approached the vehicle as it stopped at a gas station in Augusta.

The truck driver was identified as Don Soucy, 52, of New Brunswick, Canada.

“Soucy ultimately cooperated with the investigation and provided the stolen license plate to Troopers, indicating he had found it along the highway in Massachusetts and displaying it on his truck when traveling through toll plazas to avoid payment,” MSP said.

MSP says that Soucy was issued criminal summonses for Theft of lost or mis laden property, theft of services, theft by deception, and attaching false plates (all Class E crimes).
