Nine cows killed after semi strikes herd on Oklahoma highway

Officials in Oklahoma say that multiple cows were killed after they were hit by a big rig on a bridge near Falconhead on Wednesday night.

 

According to a July 21 statement from the Love County Fire Department, “A tractor-trailer struck a herd of cows last night on Highway 32 near Falconhead. Fire crews had been battling a grassfire on Hwy 76 and were winding down that scene when the accident occurred and several units were dispatched to respond to this scene. A total of 9 cows were struck and killed by the truck and the scene consisted of nearly a quarter of a mile of truck and animal debris along the highway.”

It isn’t clear why the animals were in the roadway.

There were no reported injuries to the truck driver, but in images shared by firefighters, you can see that the truck sustained heavy damage from the animal strike.

In order to remove the cows from the scene, firefighters brought in heavy equipment from Love County and from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT).

The concrete guardrails on the bridge were damaged and required inspection from ODOT.

The truck’s load of saltwater did not leak during the crash and was offloaded to another truck.

The Love County Fire Department said that it took about 4 hours to clean up the scene.

Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including Marietta Police, the Love County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and ODOT.
