The Illinois State Police (ISP) and the Illinois Trucking Association (ITA) recently teamed up with an Illinois trucking company to nab distracted drivers and encourage safe driving around commercial vehicles.

ISP, ITA and Nussbaum Transportation took part in a “Trooper in a Truck” detail on Illinois roadways, according to a July 28, 2022, ISP news release. The purpose of the detail is to allow troopers to use the higher vantage point of a semi truck to spot distracted driving and other violations that they might not normally be able to see.

See below for violations and enforcement activity from the Trooper in a Truck detail.

Distracted Driving Offenses — 16

Occupant Restraint Offenses — 1

Speeding Offenses — 6

Move Over Offenses — 1

MCS Offenses — 8

Out of Service — 1

Total Citations/Arrests — 30

Total Written Warnings — 3

“The Illinois State Police (ISP) is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone traveling on Illinois highways,” said ISP Captain Gregg Cavanaugh. “By teaming up with the trucking industry, and Nussbaum Transportation in particular for the use of their Semi and their facility, we help make our roads safer. We also would like to thank Matt Hart with the Illinois Trucking Association for their partnership. Driving distracted is a deadly problem which can have significant negative impacts on our families. ISP stands ready to serve the people of Illinois through education and enforcement.”
