Clark Memorial Bridge closed for repairs after semi truck crash

The Clark Memorial Bridge is closed for repairs Wednesday after a dramatic crash that left a semi truck dangling off the side of the structure earlier this month. 

 

The accident happened on March 1st on the Clark Memorial Bridge, also known as the Second Street Bridge, that connects downtown Louisville, Kentucky to southern Indiana. The bridge closure began on Wednesday, March 20th at 9 a.m. and will continue until the late afternoon. The bridge will then be partially opened to allow southbound traffic from Indiana to Louisville, reported WDRB.

Drivers looking to head northbound on the bridge from Louisville to Indiana will need to find an alternate route throughout the duration of the repairs, which are expected to last until mid-April. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet suggests northbound drivers detour onto Interstate 64 on the Sherman Minton Bridge or take Interstate 65 from the Kennedy Bridge. 

 

“Public safety has been and will continue to be our top priority as we work to quickly repair isolated sidewalk and railing damage on the Clark Memorial bridge,” Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray said. “This requires a great deal of coordination and fine-tuning with engineers on the two bridge projects to maintain as many travel options as possible for drivers while repairs are underway.”

Drivers are advised to expect the bridge to be fully closed intermittently as crews work to set bridge beams. The bridge is expected to fully reopen by mid-April.
