The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) says that a major interstate will be closed for days after an oversized load struck a bridge and caused damage to the structure.

The bridge strike occurred at 1:30 p.m. on April 1 in in Northeast Philadelphia.

Officials say that an “oversized vehicle” traveling on northbound I-95 struck a Conrail bridge.

No injuries were reported.

As a result of the bridge strike, northbound I-95 will remain closed for several days approaching the Betsy Ross Bridge/Aramingo Avenue Interchange as a Conrail contractor makes repairs.

PennDOT is directing drivers from northbound I-95 to use the Betsy Ross/Aramingo Avenue Interchange (Exit 26), turn right on Aramingo Avenue, and turn right onto Adams Avenue to access the ramp to I-95 North.

PennDOT is asking drivers to avoid the closure areas because significant backups and delays will occur on I-95, the alternate routes and surface streets in the vicinity of the work area.
