This week, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will open a new rest area near Three Forks.

The Headwaters Rest Area located at US 287 near the I-90 interchange will officially open at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 5.

The Headwaters Rest Area is meant to replace the dated and undersized rest area located at the 19th Avenue interchange in Bozeman, MDT says.

Amenities at the Headwaters Rest Area will include:

  • 35 truck/RV parking spaces
  • 22 passenger vehicle parking spaces
  • ƒLicense plate cameras with infrared illumination to capture data at rest area entrance and exit with illuminator at the entrance and exit of the rest area
  • Law Enforcement Office for use by the Broadwater County Sheriff, Montana Highway Patrol, and MDT Motor Carrier Services
  • Fenced pet area
  • LED lighting covering 100% of pedestrian and parking areas
  • Eight private restrooms lit by LED lights

Officials said that a Law Enforcement Office is a feature that is “not typically included at rest areas but is expected to serve nearby communities.”

MDT says that the rest area design will enable the local Sheriff and Montana Highway Patrol to view the rest area from US 287 and to conduct random drive-through patrol of site to maintain safety.
