A driver encountered an unusual roadblock on a dark Texas highway early Thursday morning, unexpectantly hitting a 300-pound alligator in the middle of the roadway.

The driver suffered minor injuries after hitting the 10-foot, 3-inch alligator on the Grand Parkway (SH-99) in East Montgomery County, Texas.

The crash happened as the driver was traveling eastbound on the highway at 3:15 a.m. on May 6.

The alligator did not survive the impact and the vehicle was severely damaged.

“Adding to the list of things not commonly seen while on patrol in Montgomery County, TX: A motor vehicle crash involving a 10-foot alligator,” said Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post.

The Sheriff’s Office also shared pictures of the alligator as it was being hauled away from the scene on the back of a trailer.
