The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has implemented travel restrictions for commercial vehicles as a major winter storm brings hazardous conditions across the state.
Forecasters predict 2 to 3 inches of snow, which is expected to transition into freezing rain and ice, creating dangerous road conditions. To ensure safety, NJDOT has issued travel bans for certain commercial vehicles, effective midnight on February 6, 2025.
Restricted Roadways:
- I-78 (entire length)
- I-80 (entire length)
- I-280 (entire length)
- I-287 (entire length)
- NJ Route 440 (Outerbridge Crossing to I-287)
Vehicles Affected by the Ban:
- All tractor-trailers (with some exceptions per the Administrative Order)
- Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks
- Passenger vehicles towing trailers
- Recreational vehicles (RVs)
- Motorcycles
Exemptions from the Travel Restrictions:
- The New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, and Atlantic City Expressway remain open to all vehicles.
- Public safety personnel, including law enforcement, healthcare workers, and critical infrastructure support personnel such as those transporting fuel and food, are exempt.
Truck drivers already in New Jersey at the time of the restrictions are advised to pull into truck stops until conditions improve. Parking on highway shoulders is strictly prohibited, NJDOT warns.
