Authorities have confirmed a third fatality in the Green River tunnel crash on Interstate 80, bringing the official death toll to three as debris removal efforts continue.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), first responders have cleared approximately half of the debris inside the 1,200-foot tunnel, where the crash occurred on February 14 at 11:37 a.m.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

As of the latest update, emergency crews have removed four destroyed passenger vehicles and nine commercial vehicles from the crash site. A total of 26 vehicles were involved in the deadly multi-vehicle pileup, but officials have not yet identified any of the victims.

Rescue and recovery efforts have been delayed by electrical failures and fires inside the tunnel, although WYDOT has stated that the structure is not at risk of collapse.

Traffic Detours and Community Impact

WYDOT has contracted DeBernardi Construction to install concrete barriers to help regulate traffic flow around the tunnel. A new detour route is expected to be operational by Wednesday.

“We appreciate the support of the Green River community in keeping traffic moving during this complex investigation,” said WYDOT District Engineer John Eddins. “We understand the significant impact this detour has had, and we are working to minimize further disruptions.”

 Investigation and Road Conditions

The crash remains under investigation, with more details expected as emergency crews continue clearing the tunnel. WYDOT previously stated that snowy and wet conditions were present at the time of the crash, and that the speed limit had been reduced from 65 mph to 35 mph for safety reasons.

Authorities will provide further updates as the situation develops.
