WYDOT Implements New Width Restrictions for Green River Tunnel on I-80

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has introduced new width restrictions for vehicles traveling through the Green River Tunnel on Interstate 80, following recent paving operations.

On March 11, WYDOT announced that vehicles passing through the eastbound Green River Tunnel must not exceed 8 feet 6 inches in width. Previously, the restriction allowed for a 10.5-foot width and a 16-foot height.

Oversized vehicles are advised to contact the Wyoming Highway Patrol’s oversize load permit office for detour information.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts After Deadly Tunnel Crash

Traffic remains head-to-head in the eastbound tunnel due to the February 14 crash in the westbound tunnel, which involved 26 vehicles and resulted in three fatalities. The crash triggered a massive fire, and investigations are still ongoing.

WYDOT is now prioritizing clean-up operations to reopen the westbound tunnel, but the process is extensive, and there is no estimated reopening date.

WYDOT has contracted Clean Harbors, an environmental and industrial service company, to handle clean-up and disposal efforts inside the westbound tunnel.

Driver Advisory

Motorists traveling through the Green River Tunnel are urged to drive cautiously, remain aware of roadside workers and vehicles, and adhere to new width restrictions.
